“Prometheus Unbound: Power Re-imagined for a Demos of Peace,
Equity and Sustainability”

Dear Symi friends,

I am delighted to invite you the unique and transformative 26th International Symi Symposium.

Our Symposium this year is set in the beautiful environment of Greece, in Pythagorion – Samos between June 29th to July 4th, 2024 and we embark on a thought-provoking journey as we hope to explore forward-thinking and transformative ideas about how power can be re-claimed and used in innovative ways to benefit society as a whole, focusing on peace, equity, and sustainability.

Why This Symposium Is a must-attend:

  • Confronting Global Crises: Tackling major challenges from climate change and pandemic preparedness to the unregulated advancements in AI and technology, this symposium is poised to address the most pressing current and future global issues.

  • Redefining Democracy: We delve into a critical analysis of the current state of democracy worldwide, examining the rise of extreme demagoguery and ideologies, the decay – or transformation – of traditional political structures, the concerning spread of corruption, inequities and the role of social media platforms in dominating our public space and discourse.

  • Navigating Conflicts in search of Peace: Explore new approaches to resolving ongoing conflicts, how climate and technology are shaping the nature of conflict as well as weaponry, yet how these can become a catalyst for peace. As always, we will include debates on ongoing conflict situations such as in Ukraine, the Middle East, the Balkans, Africa, and how these are affected by global geo-political tensions.

  • Fostering Innovative Paths Forward: We do not simply discuss problems; we are actively seeking and formulating groundbreaking, actionable solutions. We seek to make this symposium a workshop for change-makers.

A Gathering of activists and visionaries:

Join a very special and open-minded group of intellectuals, politicians, Nobel laureates, entrepreneurs, diplomats, scientists, and activists.

Our past symposia have featured many luminaries who not only actively participate but also provide mentorship for young leaders who attend parallel activities to our Symposium. This leadership mentorship is becoming a major part of our ongoing work.

A Legacy of Impact:

The Symi Symposium isn’t just an event; it’s a catalyst for change. Celebrating 25 years of groundbreaking dialogue and collaboration, we have influenced significant policy initiatives and fostered cross-cultural networks and partnerships and continue to do so.

Your Role in This Historical Convergence:

Your unique perspectives and expertise are indispensable in our shared journey. Together, we hope to sculpt ideas and strategies that transcend boundaries, inspire generations and shape a future that is more equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.

Your presence and contributions are crucial.

Our invitation extends to spouses, partners and family members who are encouraged to join in our discussions and activities.

Basics about our Symi Symposium

S

Such a gathering, first took place on the island of Symi, and then became the “Symi Symposium” which now is an annual event held in Greece, during the summer. It was initiated by George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece, and is organized by the Andreas Papandreou Foundation. The symposium aims to bring together a diverse group of influential progressive thinkers and leaders from around the world to discuss and debate on various global issues, such as politics, economics, social issues, and the environment.

Y

You will find that the setting of the symposium, on a Greek island, provides a relaxed yet stimulating atmosphere for participants to engage in open and meaningful dialogues. Attendees typically include politicians, academics, journalists, innovators, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. The discussions and debates that take place at the Symi Symposium are known for their depth and the wide range of perspectives represented.

M

More than a simple event it is characterized by its informal and intimate setting, which encourages frank and open discussion, often leading to innovative ideas and solutions to complex global challenges. Families, spouses, partners, are more than welcome! The outcomes of these discussions are sometimes published or disseminated more broadly, contributing to public policy debates and academic discourse.

I

Invitations to the Symi Symposium reflect a tradition of intellectual and philosophical gatherings dating back to ancient Greece, when philosophers shared drink and food together, and is a modern-day example of how dialogue and exchange of ideas can lead to greater understanding and potential solutions to global issues.
